From the President

Dr. John AvendanoI would like to welcome everyone to our Spring Semester, 2012, here at Kankakee Community College. As classes begin, we as an institution understand students in higher education have many demands on their time. At KCC, providing for your educational needs is our highest priority. We are fortunate to also be able to provide you with the opportunity to gain other college experiences with our activities and sports.

We have so many activities ahead of us this year. We are starting off the semester with a Pack the House in the Ryan Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan. 14 from 1-5 p.m. to watch our women's and men's basketball teams play Highland Community College. A live DJ, free throw shoot-out, prizes and free admission promise to make the event one for the entire college community and families. Get on your Cavalier gear and join us for the fun!

I hope to see many of you at the Spring Club Rush in the Cavalier Room and College Center on Wednesday, Jan. 18 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. What an opportunity for learning what the college has to offer besides excellent programs! As a student enrolled for higher education, you will find it is easy to get more out of the experience by what you are able to contribute -- your time, your efforts, and your ideas. Our student clubs are very active on campus and ideas for new events and activities are always welcome.

You may notice some blue lights in our parking lot this semester. They are emergency call boxes for your use. We have increased our safety measures at the college by installing additional exterior lighting as well as exterior security cameras around campus. If you have a safety concern, please do not hesitate to share it with an advisor, the front desk reception staff, a faculty member, or an administrator. One of our primary goals at the college is to do the best we can to ensure the safety of all of our students so learning takes the priority.

I know Dean Julia Waskosky provides email communications to all students for important event and academic dates. Please be sure to take the time to read them and share the information with others. If there is an item you feel needs to be addressed in student services, Dean Waskosky is always open to suggestions. Again, as a student at KCC, I urge you to avail yourselves of the many resources the college provides while you are here.

It is my personal hope to meet many of you throughout the semester and to see you at the athletic and college events. Coach Dennis Clark of our women's softball team now has 999 wins to his record. I hope we will all be there to celebrate when he reaches the historic 1000-win mark.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and myself, welcome to KCC. May your time spent here enrich your lives with learning and new friendships. If I can ever be of service to you, please do not hesitate to seek me out.
