Sustainability at KCC
KCC is a leader in sustainability initiatives in higher education.
- Our students are green-savvy, building solar-photovoltaic panels, rain gardens, wind turbines and greenhouses, leading recycling programs and participating in community projects.
- Our faculty are leaders in green curriculums, such as electrical technology with a renewable energy specialization, horticulture, and classes in solar-thermal, solar-photovoltaic and small wind energy technologies.
- Our staff is focused on sustainable processes - recycling paper, glass and metal, reducing water and electricity consumption, and re-purposing office supplies.
- Our campus utilizes green building technologies, including LEED Silver standards.
We reach out through Green Happenings, local educational events; the Green Scene, a quarterly newsletter; and the Green Minute, a daily radio spot that offer tips on living the green life.
We're a charter member of AASHE STARS and member of the Illinois Green Economy Network (IGEN), a partnership of all 48 community colleges in Illinois.
