The third annual KCC Sustainability Week was held April 20 - 24, 2009. There was a week long electronic waste recycling effort, four speakers on sustainability topics on Tuesday, April 21, a Sustainability EXPO on Wednesday, April 22 and two movies were shown on Tuesday and Thursday evening.
The Legat Architects “Solar Earth” exhibit arrived on campus on Wednesday afternoon and was on display near the workforce development office entrance.
The four speakers on Tuesday covered Permaculture, a survey of Renewable Energy, and “Green Buildings” in Kankakee and the City of Chicago.
Electric car, wind turbines at Expo
The EXPO featured 41 exhibitors including wind turbines, an electric boat, a commuter bicycle, and a plug-in electric car. Several hundred people attended the event to view the items on exhibit.
Recycling effort collects almost 2 tons of electronic waste
The electronic waste recycling effort resulted in collection of 3,639 pounds of unused, unwanted electronic equipment including 9 TVs, about 3 dozen monitors, and 10 computers. These materials were removed for recycling by Recycle for Illinois, Inc. at their Peoria area processing facility.
Worn out batteries and cell phones were also collected as part of the recycling activities during the week.
Approximately 240 lbs. of batteries were dropped off and five cell phones.
The batteries were taken to a local recycler and the phones were donated to KC - CASA for conversion for use by their clients.
