During the 2010 Sustainability Week, cell phones were collected to benefit Harbor House and there was a special effort to recycle batteries. The result: 31 cell phones and about 245 pounds of batteries!

Volunteers scan pond area for rocksOn Tuesday, April 20th, more than 30 faculty, staff, and students assisted with an effort to prepare the pond area on the North side of campus for seeding as part of the on-going project to create a functional and aesthetic wetland habitat. Thanks to all who helped!

Sustainability Expo attracts 41 exhibitors

Another successful Sustainability EXPO was held in the KCC Atrium on April 22, the 40th Anniversary of EARTH DAY. This was the second year an expo was included in KCC’s Sustainability Week events. Several hundred visited the 41 exhibitors who offered information regarding wind turbines, electric boats, hybrid vehicles, recycled content products, home energy efficiency products and services, and much more.

There was a diesel powered motorcycle (Faculty member Chris Spracklin’s toy) and an “Energy Wall” created by the Eastern Illini Electric Cooperative to demonstrate the best types of insulation to install in homes to reduce energy needed for heating and cooling.
