Congratulations to Distinguished Alumnus John Fulton

Fulton received the KCC Foundation's Distinguished Alumnus award at its Blue Tie Gala and donor recognition event in May. This award recognizes an alumnus for exemplary leadership and community involvement.

Fulton's long history with KCC began when he earned associate degrees in business, arts and science and agriculture from KCC. He fondly remembers farming full time as a student and sleeping in a truck between classes. He also noted that five family members have taken classes or earned degrees from KCC.

While a student at the college, Fulton founded the KCC Veterans Club and served as its first president. Since, he also served as president of the KCC Alumni Association and is a member of the KCC Foundation Board.

Last year, when Fulton learned that KCC was establishing a new agriculture program, he asked the Green Club, a group of antique tractor enthusiasts, to coordinate a fundraiser for student scholarships. The Ride the River drive was a success, raising more than $9,000 for scholarships. More than 180 members collected pledges. On the day of Ride the River in 2008, 135 antique tractors were driven east along the Kankakee River and south to L'Erable.

"It's easy to see why the foundation selected John as our recipient," said Becky Wilder, coordinator of scholarships and annual giving at KCC. "John has provided leadership and guidance for our alumni and students. It's a pleasure to give him this award."

In addition to his affiliation with the college, Fulton is a community volunteer and is active with the Lions Club of Kankakee, the Kankakee County Corngrowers, Options Center for Independent Living and with the Veterans Assistant Commission of Kankakee County.
