Points Policy

If on the deadline date, there is a greater number of eligible applicants to a program than there are places available, those eligible applicants with the highest points are accepted according to the point system as outlined below. Applicants will not be awarded points for coursework or scores used to meet academic minimum eligibility requirements listed under item 3 of the Adademic Requirements for Eligibility. Required documentation must have been received by the Office of Admissions and Registration in order for a point to be awarded.

The maximum number of allowable points for items 2-6 below is 10. Points are not awarded for college coursework described in 2-6 in progress at the deadline date. If a high school senior is taking a full-year class for which a point is awarded according to 2-6 below, a conditional point will be awarded if the applicant has a grade of "C" in the class for the first semester. If the applicant does not have a C" average grade at the end of the year, the point will be withdrawn, which could result in that applicant's conditional acceptance to the program also being withdrawn.

1. An applicant will be given points according to scores received on the COMPASS test using the following scale. If the test is taken more than once in the two years prior to the month of the deadline, the score report from the most recent test will be used to award points.  If COMPASS scores are used, the writing, reading, pre-algebra and algebra sections are utilized to calculate points. (See Optional Retest section for retesting criteria.)

Total Stanines

0-4 = 0 pts. 11-13 = 3 pts. 20-22 = 6 pts. 29-31 = 9 pts.
5-7 = 1 pt. 14-16 = 4 pts. 23-25 = 7 pts. 32-36 = 10 pts.
8-10 = 2 pts. 17-19 = 5 pts. 26-28 = 8 pts.

2. One (1) point will be awarded to an applicant who has successfully completed an Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) approved Basic Nursing Assistant training program with a grade of "C" or better. Documentation must consist of an official college transcript or a certificate of completion issued by the program sponsor which must include the program number issued by the IDPH, or a document stating the applicant is currently on Illinois' Certified Nursing Assistant registry. Licensure as an LPN or RN in the state of Illnois may be substituted.

3. A point will be awarded for each one-year high school (grades 9-12) course in biology, chemistry, physics or anatomy/physiology completed with grades of "C" or better within the seven years prior to the dealine if it is not being used to meet an eligibility requirement. (A grade of "C" one semester and a grade of "D" the other semester does not equal a "C" average grade.) Points will not be awarded for general science, botany, earth science/ecology, physical science, astronomy, etc.

One (1) point is awarded for each biology (except botany, field studies and environmental biology), chemistry, physics, or anatomy/physiology course offered at KCC which the applicant completes within 7 years prior to the deadline with grade averages of "C" or better if it is not being used to meet an eligibility requirement. If a course taken at another institution is officially equated to a KCC course which awards a point, a point will be awarded for a grade of "C" or better. If a biology, chemistry, physics or anatomy/physiology course taken at another college is not officially equated to a KCC course which awards a point, the decision to award a point rests with the director of advisement services and the program director.

4. One (1) point will be awarded to applicants to the Registered Nursing program (except for advanced placement sequence) who have a practical nursing certificate from a regionally accredited program.  One (1) pint is also awarded to applicants to the Practical or Registered Nursing program for having an EMT-P certificate (including applicants to the advanced placement sequences). Documentation must consist of of a current license.

5. One (1) point will be awarded to applicants to the Radiography or Respiratory Therapist program for certification/licensure in any of the following areas: phlebotomy or EMT-basic/EMT-I/paramedic. Documentation must consist of a current EMT/paramedic license or phlebotomy certificate.
Completion of HLTH 1404 and HLTH 1412 with grades of C or better will be used in lieu of phlebotomy certification.

6. One (1) point will be awarded to applicants to the Medical Laboratory Technology program for successful completion of KCC's medical laboratory assistant program, or completion of HLTH 1404 and HLTH 1412 with grades of "C" or better; a point will not be given for each. Documentation must consist of an official college transcript indicating the certificate was granted or or that the courses were completed with grades of "C" or better. One (1) point will also be awarded to a licensed paramedic. A current paramedic license is required for awarding the paramedic point.

7.  One (1) point will be awarded to applicants to the Physical Therapist Assistant program for appropriate documantation of any of the following:  approved kisesiology courses, or licensure as a massage therapist or an an athletic trainer.  One (1) point will also be awarded for documentation (on signed employer letterhead) of 200 hours of work experience as a Rehab Tech or Physical Therapy Aide or documentation (on the KCC provided form) of a minimum of 20 hours of Physical Therapy observation/volunteer experience at two different facilities, one of which must be an inpatient setting; both must be within the past two years.

Exception 1-Regressing

A point will not be awarded for Human Biology if it is taken after or concurrently with Anatomy and Physiology I or II with grades of "C" or better. A point will not be awared for Basic Biology (BIOL094) if it is taken after or concurrently with any college credit biology course passed with a "C" or better.

Once a chemistry or physics course has been completed and a grade of "C" or better, a point will not be awarded for subsequently completing a chemistry or physics course at a lower level.

Exception 2-Duplication

Points will not be awarded for duplicate course work.  For example, if a person received a point for a semester of college biology, he/she willl not be awarded an additional point for taking essentially the same course at a different college.  For purposes of this rule, students who completed one year of high school anatomy or anatomy and physiology wold not be awarded a point for also completing KCC's Human Biology.  If unsure about whether this rule would permit the awarding of a point or not, discuss the question with a health careers advisor prior to enrolling.

Tie-Breaking rules

If a choice must be made among a number of applicants with the same number of points, selection for admission will be made on the basis of:

1. Which applicant(s) has completed the greatest number of non-RNUR, -PNUR, PHTA, -XRAY, -RESP, or -MEDT courses in the curriculum, and

2. Which applicant(s) has the highest cumulative GPA (KCC + current district's community college if applicable.) If the applicant has earned fewer than 12 semester hours of college credit coursework at KCC (and current district's community college if applicable), his/her cumulative GPA will be considered to be zero (0) for tie-breaking purposes.
