How do I register for an online course?

The registration process is the same for online courses as it is for all KCC courses. For more information on registration you can view

Enroll in 7 Easy Steps.

What is meant by online, hybrid, and face-to-face?

Online

An online course is a course in which eighty (80%) percent or more of the instruction excluding lab hours is primarily with Web-based technology i.e., ANGEL, with the possible exception of assessment requirements. The instructor may or may not impose a requirement for proctored assessments through any variety of options including on the KCC campus or at other arranged sites, with a KCC employee or other arranged persons, as set up by the course instructor or arranged between the instructor and student. Courses that have a face to face requirement for assessment purposes will be described this way in the course description.

Hybrid

A hybrid course is any course which includes content online as well as in a classroom, lab or other prescribed location. Less than 80% of the instruction for the course content is delivered with web-based technology i.e. Angel, but there is required face to face time, including any lab requirements, and any other face to face course activities beyond any face to face assessment requirements of an online course.

Face-to-face course using technology

A face to face course using technology is a course in which all of the instruction is scheduled to be delivered face to face but the instructor uses web-based technology i.e. Angel as a document repository, a resource for learners, and or a delivery mode for a limited number of course learning and or assessment activities. The instructor will make any document, resources, or learning and or assessment activities delivered online, available offline to any learners who request it.

Do I need to come to campus to participate in an online course?

Maybe! Whether the course in an online course or a hybrid course determines the amount and type of on campus requirements.

For an online course the instructor may choose to require a face to face option for assessment purposes. Face to face assessment requirements may be set up at locations other than a KCC campus. However, this is up to the course instructor.

For a hybrid class there will be some on campus requirements. It may be necessary to come to campus for the laboratory portion of a class and or for some of the actual class sessions.

How much time do I get to complete a course?

KCC online courses correspond with the college's semester sessions. Each online course has a start date and an end date. In between, the schedule of coursework, assignments, and due dates are determined by each instructor.

Can I see a sample online course?

Yes! Go to http://online.kcc.edu/. The Username is online and the Password is guest.

Does KCC offer proctored testing?

Some courses will require that students take exams in a proctored environment. Students can take exams on-campus via office of Assessment Services. To assist in making sure that there are proctors available, students need to make arrangements one week prior to their desired testing time. Check with Gisel Waide at 802-8530 for more details.

How do I contact my instructor?

You have several options. KCconnect (connect.kcc.edu) contains the instructor name and email within the Search for Credit Classes.  Prior to the start of your online course your instructor will contact you via e-mail and provide contact and communication directions. Or, after you log into your online course, contact your instructor via ANGEL e-mail. Finally, after having logged into your ANGEL course, read the course syllabus. You should find the syllabus under the Resources tab. The syllabus should provide instructor contact information.

Any additional routes of contact such as phones numbers, web sites etc., will be provided by your instructor.

What kind of hardware and software do I need?

Hardware and Software Requirements are found here

What if I have technical problems while taking an online course?

If you are having problems connecting to the Internet, please contact your Internet Service Provider. If you are an AOL user, please see "Information for AOL Users" found by clicking on "Online Course Information" under Quicklinks on http://www.kcc.edu/. If you have any problems once you are online, it is very important that you contact your instructor so that he/she is aware that you are having problems. You should have their office phone number from the "How do I contact my instructor?" question above. Also, please see "What if I have questions that are NOT on this FAQ list?" below.

What about assignments, testing and attendance?

Each instructor decides how they will handle written assignments, testing and attendance. They may allow assignments to be submitted via e-mail, fax, or U.S. Mail. They may allow testing to be done online or in a proctored environment on campus. You will have to check with your instructor. Testing may also take place off-site at a student support center convenient to the student's location. Attendance may be taken during virtual class sessions or may not be required at all. Remember, the answer to these questions along with other course policies will most likely be found in the course syllabus!

How much will an online course cost?

The basic fee structure for an online course at KCC is the same as any credit course and can be found outline on the Tuition and Activity Fees page. In addition, online courses have a $15 technology fee.

How do I know when my online course begins?

The course start date is listed in the Search for Credit Classes found in KCConnect (connect.kcc.edu).  You should also be notified via KCC e-mail before your class starts with course log in information. If you do not receive information by the first day of class as shown on the KCC calendar or in the Search for Credit Classes, please contact the KCC Help Desk (815.802.8900).

Prior to the start of your online course your instructor will contact you via KCC e-mail and provide contact and communication directions. After you log in to your online course, contact your instructor via ANGEL e-mail. This way, your instructor can have your most current contact information including your e-mail address. This allows for a smoother beginning for both you and your instructor.

After logging into your ANGEL course, read the course syllabus. You should find the syllabus under the Resources or Lessons tabs. The syllabus will contain course information.

How do I get my username and password?

If you do not know your user ID, please go to KCConnect and then click on "What's my User ID". After retrieving your User Id, please click on Change Password. Are there any problems taking online courses if I use America Online(AOL)?

Yes. The AOL software includes an embedded Web browser that can have some erratic behavior at times. Therefore, we recommend that AOL users log on to the Internet with AOL as usual. THEN, before going to their online class they should minimize the AOL software and bring up a stand alone Web browser - Internet Explorer 7.0 or Firefox 2.0. This allows for a more trouble free online experience.

If you are an AOL user, please see "Information for AOL Users", found by clicking on "Online Course Information" under Quicklinks on http://www.kcc.edu/. If you have any problems once you are online, it is very important that you contact your instructor so that he/she is aware that you are having problems.
