A native of the Peoria area, Donnie Denson has worked at KCC for the past 16 years, and is proud to call Kankakee home.
Being employed by the college has brought about many positive experiences over the years for Denson. This is the 16th season he has been associated with the women’s basketball team in some capacity.
In Denson’s first year as head coach in 2000-01, his team produced a 26-7 record, and played in the Region IV Championship game. In 2001-02, the Lady Cavaliers squad earned a 26-9 record, captured the Region IV Championship and finished 12th in the nation at the NJCAA National Tournament. In Denson’s third season, the team finished eighth at the National Tournament and compiled a record of 29-7. In 2003-04, his team finished with an eighth place finish in the national tournament and concluded the season with a 23-12 record.
In 2004-05 the team finished with a record of 23-8, played for the region championship and was ranked as high as fourth in the country. The 2005-06 season concluded with a record of 25-8 and the team won the region championship for the 14th time in 18 years. 2006-07 found the Lady Cavs back in contention for the national championship and finishing the season with a record of 27-7. The Lady Cavs returned again in 2007-08 to play for a national championship and finished as Runner-Up with a record of 30-3. Most recently in 2008, Denson led the Lady Cavaliers to a 28-7 record, where again they won the Region IV Chamipionship and placed 5th in the National Tournament.
Over the last eight seasons, the Lady Cavaliers have compiled a 237-68 record under Denson’s command. With a winning percentage of .777, Denson was the team’s assistant coach from 1997 until being named head coach for the 2000-01 season.
Denson came to KCC as a Fitness Center specialist and Athletic Trainer in 1992, and is currently the coordinator of athletic facilities and intramurals for the Athletic Department.
Denson graduated from Farmington East High School in Farmington, and earned a bachelor’s degree from Eureka College. He currently resides in Kankakee with his wife, Deb, and their son, David.
