IDES provides unemployment insurance (UI), employment services and guidance to workers, job seekers, and employers through a statewide network of IDES offices and Illinois workNet centers. The agency combines federally-funded job training programs in Illinois into a "workforce development" system where individuals can find a job or train for a new career.

Under the sponsorship of the US Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration, the O*NET program is the nation's primary source of occupational information. The O*NET database, containing information on hundreds of standardized and occupation-specific descriptors,is available to the public at no cost, is continually updated by surveying a broad range of workers from each occupation.
