Chester S. Gardner, Ph.D.

Chester S. Gardner Ph.D. serves as special assistant to the president of the University of Illinois and is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the Urbana-Champaign campus of the university. Gardner's research has concentrated on optical communications, adaptive imaging, and laser remote sensing of the atmosphere. He and his students have developed and deployed laser-based instruments throughout the world, including the north and south poles and aboard the space shuttle Discovery.

As special assistant to the president, Gardner is leading the establishment of the University of Illinois Global Campus (www.global.uillinois.edu), which will develop and deliver Internet-based degree, certificate and professional development programs on a very large scale to nontraditional audiences worldwide. Most recently, he served for seven years (1999-2006) as vice president for Academic Affairs, the chief academic and budget officer for the university.
