Transferring from KCC Checklist

  • Choose a major
If you need help, assistance is offered through the Career Planning Services office, your advisor, and the coordinator of the Transfer Center.

  • Choose a university
Choose two or three schools that you would like to attend. Consult your academic advisor each semester to choose and enroll in courses to transfer to the four-year college or university. Note the required admission GPA for your intended major and the application dates. Most senior institutions accept applications one year prior to the desired term of entry.

KCC participates in the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI), a statewide transfer agreement for general education courses. To see how your general education courses transfer between Illinois community colleges, go to the IAI web site at http://www.itransfer.org/ and choose IAI.

To find out how your courses will count toward a bachelor's degree, visit the MyCreditsTransfer web site at http://www.itransfer.org/. Information about how courses transfer between participating institutions, the majors institutions offer, the graduation requirements for different majors, and how course credits transfer to satisfy degree requirements is available. You may login as a guest to access most of the resources available on the site.

  • Visit two or three schools
Attend open house dates at four-year colleges and universities. Links to schedule visits at Illinois' state universities are listed under the "Area Colleges & Universities" tab.

  • Apply for admission
Select your transfer college or university and check on its application period for transfer students. Have your KCC transcript sent to the chosen college or university when submitting your application.

  • Apply for financial aid
Complete the financial aid process by completing a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) application.  Online applications are available at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.

  • File your KCC graduation petition
Schedule an appointment with your KCC academic advisor in order to complete your petition to graduate the semester (fall or spring) prior to transfer.

  • Send your final transcript
After acceptance, have your final KCC transcript sent to the school with the degree posted.

  • Stay in touch with your transfer institution
Attend "Transfer Day," complete the housing process and register for classes as soon as possible.
