Horticulture
KCC is excited to offer classes in horticulture starting with the fall 2009 semester.
Two enrollment options are offered: an Associate of Applied Science degree and an Advanced Certificate. In the Associate degree option students will complete nine horticulture courses along with a number of general education requirements. The Certificate enrollment option offers eight horticulture courses only, with no general education course requirements. For a complete overview of both the Associate of Applied Science degree and Advanced Certificate in Horticulture, please see About the Horticulture Program.
As a profession, horticulture offers numerous career choices and flexibility. Opportunities include owning or working in a variety of horticultural businesses such as landscape businesses, nurseries, and retail plant stores. Horticulturalists can also have rewarding careers working in agricultural fields such as orchards and vegetable farms. The recent trend in ecologically and environmentally sound landscaping has created a larger demand for horticulturalists familiar with the use of native and natural landscapes in residential and commercial settings.
Horticulture at KCC will be approached in a practical, hands-on manner that will afford students the opportunity to put classroom studies into real world action. Students in the program will have the opportunity to put their horticultural skills into action using the college’s multiple hands-on laboratory settings, including a three-hole golf course and greenhouse/land lab facility. The horticulture program at KCC focuses on fundamental training in horticulture, with an eye to the future of sustainable horticultural practices.
