Parenting Education

Adult Parenting Programs

KCC's Adult Parenting Program is a unique part of KCC's adult education system. KCC was one of the first colleges in Illinois to offer educational support designed to combat the cycle of child abuse and neglect.

Adult Parenting Programs are designed to build parenting skills by focusing on self-esteem, communication techniques and stress management. Specialized courses, workshops, support groups and home visits to participants are offered. There also are special events to promote family unity, such as picnics and other outings.

Young Parents Program

A Healthy Families Illinois/Ounce of Prevention program, the KCC Young Parents Program offers free support to young families in Kankakee County.

The Young Parents Program offers home visits, support groups and doula services which work toward strengthening the parent/child relationship.

For the children, the program offers developmentally appropriate opportunities and activities.

For the parents, the program offers help in:

  • growing and changing as their children grow.
  • becoming more aware of the importance of the early years of life.
  • becoming aware of their role as their child's most important teacher.
  • strengthening child-rearing skills.
  • relating to their children in a positive way.
  • developing child-rearing goals which meet their needs.
  • gaining a new awareness of their ability to function in both the home
    and neighborhood.
  • becoming better users of community services.
