The Grundy Livingston Kankakee Workforce Board is governed by a volunteer board of directors responsible for policy development and oversight of local workforce development initiatives in partnership with the local elected officials. In Illinois, there are 26 local Workforce Boards formed in response to the federal Workforce Investment Act.
Workforce Board membership includes representatives from business and industry, education agencies, community-based organizations, economic development agencies, public employment services, public assistance agencies, vocational rehabilitation, and labor organizations. Membership is drawn from individuals who have optimum policy-making authority from their organization.
The board’s role is to ensure that the local workforce investment system is market-driven and responsive in meeting the employment and training needs of employers and job seekers. The Workforce Board serves as a point of contact for business, industry and the public sector to communicate their workforce needs and to provide a forum where private and public sector leaders jointly consider the area’s workforce investment needs. The board assists in the development of new training programs to benefit the area’s workforce, and offers advice regarding workforce policy and programs to local elected officials, employers, education and employment agencies and citizens. The board coordinates with economic development agencies’ efforts and activities to promote the area’s availability of qualified workers.
The Grundy Livingston Kankakee Workforce Board plays a key role in the economic development of our area. It brings together a myriad of employment, training and educational services and transforms them into a comprehensive and easily accessed system that supports the development of a world-class workforce. Its activities support industry-based workforce development strategies, labor market analysis, community planning, focused economic development efforts, collaborative partnerships with education and training providers, and improvement of the economic vitality of the three-county area.
The Grundy Livingston Kankakee Workforce Board collaborates regionally as a member of The Workforce Boards of Metropolitan Chicago, a consortium of nine workforce boards in the Chicago metropolitan region. The boards recognize that the economic vitality of each individual area is impacted by cross-geographic issues. The consortium focuses on regional initiatives aimed at supporting business, community, and the region’s economic growth and vitality. Through this regional collaboration, the workforce boards are building system change strategies to ensure that the education and workforce system are aligned with the skills that businesses need in their workforce and to ensure the continued economic strength of the region.
