At KCC, we are committed to providing you with the information and resources you need to achieve your academic and career goals.
All students identified as degree-seeking are assigned a specific adviser who specializes in advising students with the same degree goal. The adviser's primary role is to assist students in developing an academic plan that will result in either: (a) smooth transfer to a student's targeted college/university for their desired major or (b) the acquisition of the knowledge, skills, and/or credentials that make the student a competitive, successful employee in their chosen profession.
Consistent planning is key to a successful academic career. It is your responsibility to develop a comprehensive academic plan with an adviser and to make sure it is updated as needed.
Advisement appointments:
An appointment is necessary for advisers to provide quality service for a number of advisement tasks. During an appointment, advisers can give you their full attention and have time to do the most thorough job possible. Advisement appointments can cover a number of topics, including:
- All types of petitions
- Career development assistance
- Applying to a health career program
- Evaluations of eligibility and points toward acceptance to a health career program
- Questions on transfer issues
- Development of a comprehensive educational plan
- Assistance scheduling courses
- Miscellaneous questions requiring more than 10 minutes
Adviser appointments are available 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Fridays. To make an advisement appointment, phone (815) 802-8500.
Walk-in advisement
For tasks that require 10 minutes or less to complete, walk-in service is provided. These tasks might include:
- Scheduling one or two classes when transfer issues are not involved
- Dropping/adding a class or two when you know what is needed/wanted
- Withdrawing from all courses
- Changing curriculum
- Registering for classes which follow an educational plan created with an academic adviser
- Printing and "translating" degree audits
- Miscellaneous questions requiring no more than 10 minutes to answer
IMPORTANT: Due to the time limitation when you register on a walk-in basis, you (the student) assume the responsibility that the courses in which you enroll are appropriate for your academic goals.
A walk-in adviser is available on a first-come first-served basis 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Fridays. A wait may be necessary depending on demand.
Advising services are free. It is the student's responsibility to initiate contact with an academic adviser. Periodic meetings with an adviser are strongly encouraged to ensure that an educational path appropriate for academic and career goals is being followed.
We hope that you will easily find the information you need relative to advisement services on this web site; however, if you cannot find information you need, please phone (815) 802-8500 or stop by the advising center in Student Services, Room D222. We look forward to the opportunity to serve you and make your KCC experience outstanding.
Advisers also help students decide on academic and career goals, access a wide array of academic and career information and connect with academic support services. They assist students with academic problem solving and decision making, and generally serve as an academic mentor. Advisers also can refer students seeking assistance with emotional or mental health issues to community resources. KCC does not offer on-campus counseling services. If you are in need or know of someone in need of personal counseling services that may include but are not limited to mental health, substance abuse, family issues, legal issues, health care, emergency and disaster services or aging, please visit http://www.kan-i-help.org/ for a list of community agencies.
