Advising

At KCC, we are committed to providing you with the information and resources you need to achieve your academic and career goals.

Students who are seeking a degree are assigned an advisor who specializes their specific academic area. The advisor's primary role is to assist each student in developing an academic plan that will result in either:
-- Smooth transfer to his/her chosen college/university in his/her desired major; or
-- The acquisition of the knowledge, skills, and/or credentials to make him/her a competitive, successful employee in his/her chosen profession.

Consistent planning is key to a successful academic career. It is your responsibility to develop a comprehensive academic plan with an advisor and to make sure it is updated as needed.

Advisement services

Advising services are free. It is the student's responsibility to initiate contact with an academic advisor. Periodic meetings with an advisor are strongly encouraged to ensure that an educational path appropriate for academic and career goals is being followed.

If you cannot find advising information you need, please phone 815-802-8500 or stop by Student Services, Room D222. We look forward to the opportunity to serve you and make your KCC experience outstanding.

Advisors also help students decide on academic and career goals, access a wide array of academic and career information and connect with academic support services. They assist students with academic problem solving and decision making, and generally serve as an academic mentor. KCC also offers counseling referral services. If you are in need of or know of someone in need of counseling referral services, please contact Meredith Purcell at 815-802-8514 or mpurcell@kcc.edu.

Advisement appointments

An appointment provides time for quality service for a number of advisement tasks. During this time, advisors can give you their full attention and do the most thorough job possible. Advisement appointments can cover a number of topics, including:

  • All types of petitions
  • Career development assistance
  • Applying to a health career program
  • Evaluations of eligibility and points toward acceptance to a health career program
  • Questions on transfer issues
  • Development of a comprehensive educational plan
  • Assistance scheduling courses
  • Miscellaneous questions requiring more than 10 minutes

Appointments are available 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays and 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Fridays. Please note that KCC is closed most Fridays in May, June and July. To make an advisement appointment, phone 815-802-8500.

10-Minute Advising

On days that appointments are offered, students can meet with an advisor for tasks that require 10 minutes or less to complete.  The tasks might include:

  • Scheduling one or two classes when transfer issues are not involved
  • Dropping/adding a class or two when you know what is needed/wanted
  • Withdrawing from all courses
  • Changing curriculum
  • Registering for classes which follow an educational plan created with an academic advisor
  • Printing and "translating" degree audits
  • Miscellaneous questions requiring no more than 10 minutes to answer

IMPORTANT: When you register afer a walk-in advisement session, you (the student) assume  responsibility that the courses you enrolled for are appropriate for your academic goals.

A 10-minute advisor is available on a first-come first-served basis 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays and 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Fridays. A wait may be necessary depending on demand.

Open Advisement - on Tuesdays & Wednesdays

On Tuesdays and Wednesdays we offer open advising, meaning advisors are available to meet with students without an appointment.  Students are seen on a first-come, first-serve basis for any of the topics mentioned above.

Open advising hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays 8 a.m. - 7 p.m.  Because students are helped on a first-come, first-served basis during Open Advisement, a wait may be necessary depending on demand.

Academic Advisement mission

The mission of Kankakee Community College’s Academic Advisement Program is to empower our students to achieve the academic goal(s) they set for themselves, knowing that those goals may change over time. That mission involves assisting students with (a) choosing an appropriate career goal, (b) developing an educational plan that meets their individual needs, (c) strengthening decision-making skills, and (d) growing in understanding as a student in higher education. Teaching is a significant component of our program’s developmental mission.
