Capella University was founded in 1993 by Stephen Shank, former CEO of Tonka Corporation and Dr. Harold Abelsaw. Driven by vision to create a barrier-free university for working adults, Stephen Shank saw an opportunity to offer higher education in a convenient format to allow working adults to earn degrees without the boundaries and restrictions of traditional universities. He envisioned a high quality university that people could attend from remote locations, including their homes or wherever they might be traveling, at times that were convenient to them.
In 1997, the university achieved accreditation from The Higher Learning Commission and became a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA), a body that accredits many major public and private universities. Shortly after becoming accredited, the university established the five schools that exist today: education, business and technology, human services, psychology, and undergraduate studies.
Today, Capella University offers more than 650 courses and undergraduate and graduate degree programs in nearly 70 specialized areas of study. Capella's nearly 13,000 learners include a diverse group of primarily working adults from all walks of life, including learners throughout the United States and around the world-learners who have experienced, firsthand, Stephen Shank's vision for a barrier-free, high-quality education.
Headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Capella University offers the following degrees: Bachelor's, MBA, Master's, PHD/PsyD and certificate programs.
