How to choose a program

Choosing a program, also known as choosing a major, can be one of the most challenging decisions of your college career. We've put together a few tools to help you sort out the options. Read through this page and answer the following questions to form a starting point.

Weigh your likes and dislikes.

• What types of things motivate you?
• What types of jobs or careers appeal to you?
• If you are not sure, start the process with the Career Assessment Inventory (CAI) available at KCC's Assessment Office.

Identify your academic strengths and weaknesses.

• What kind of skills do you have? Do you want to transfer to a four-year college or university after KCC?
• Take a look at the high school courses you have taken. What are your best subjects?
• What kinds of extracurricular activities have you been involved in?
• What did you learn from part-time or summer jobs?
• Start with the ASSET test at KCC and visit the KCC Career Services Office.

Determine your personality type.

• Personality characteristics are an important factor and are often not considered when choosing a career goal.
• Identify your personality type with the Myers-Brioggs Type Indicator (MBTI) available in KCC's Assessment Office.
• Match your personality type to occupations that typically work well for persons with those personality characteristics.

List your work values.

• Do you want to help society, work under pressure, belong to the group?
• Do you want stability, security, status?
• Maybe you want to have a positive impact on others.
